    Hi-
I haven't posted in awhile,,,but I went back to ENT yesterday,,hearing is worse as I knew,,,and other symptoms are less controlled,,now doc is going to put in the little "button tubes" next week. I would like to know from those who have this done what to expect from it,,,he is going to do it in the office,,,and I as usual have scared the poop outta myself by looking at videos of the procedure online,,,did it hurt?? what did you feel like after?? I have put in a call to doctor to answer some of this because I was being given soo much info at the appt that I forgot to ask LOL,,,and basically he wants to do 2 sets of steroids and if that doesn't work then the shunt surgery,,so I was to say a little more then freaked out,,so any help would be GREATLY appreciated,,

    Hi Lisa

I had a T tube put in about a month ago under general anesthetic. The procedure itself was nothing to worry about, and thats coming from someone who is scared shitless of hospitals. I couldnt get the tube put in in his office because i've got bonie polyps in my ears that made it impossible to get in. But people who ive spoken to who have had them put in with just a local anesthetic say it is very minor and nothing to worry about.

My hearing was pretty good before the procedure, and having the tube put in has definitely made my hearing worse. Especially in the lower tones, my tinnitus has also been a lot worse since the operation, especially the pulsatile type. I'm hoping this will continue to settle down though. Most people dont seem to notice any difference in the tinnitus though, so maybe i'm a bit of an exception.

After they're in, your head might feel very "airy" because your body takes a while to get used to the pressure change. It soon passes though.

So yea ...very minor procedure ....It might hurt a bit, and it might even get inflamed and need drops(mine did), but even then the discomfort will only last a week.

Has it made a difference though?! .....not sure. The only reason i got it put in was so i could use the meniett ....I haven't noticed much difference yet though, but it's still only early days.

So dont be worried. The only thing that might hurt a little is when the prick your ear drum with the anesthetic. But that only hurts for a couple of seconds.

    Good luck, and dont stress.

The button grommets that you're getting are MUCH smaller than the permanent type of T tupe I had put in, so i doubt that you would even notice it was there once it was in. lol sorry if i scared you

Hopefully it will stabilize your hearing loss. One of the other members from this site, scribbledot, had a button grommet put in and he told me that his hearing stabilized because of it, so thats some good news for you.

    Lisa or Cheese,

This is the first I have heard of these button grommets but am interested to know more. My hearing loss in my "good" ear is worsening by the day. I am on my way off of a three week regimen of Prednisone and as soon as I went down to 20mg, my hearing started getting worse again. It was okay on the higher doses. I only have four days left on it and am starting to worry. Can you tell me a little more as to how these are used for the steroids?

For me my doc is putting them in so there is basically an open port to inject steroids into the middle ear to help with the inflamation of the middle and inner ear,,,to hopefully slow down the progession of loss,,,I am keeping my fingers crossed on this one,,,and doctor said if not for anything else I can use the buttons for the meniett device if I want

I had steroids injected two years ago but nothing was inserted beforehand. It was just a straight inner ear perfusion. My hearing loss didn't start progressing again until this past June and is now going down fast. I have been off an on oral prednisone since late August. I am going back to Memphis where I had the perfusion done the first time in a couple of weeks. I don't know if they will want to inject it again or not but I plan on asking.

    Thanks.

blessed, i think they insert the grommet if they plan on doing multiple injections...... maybe it's easier on the ear drum that way.

Lisa, my healing time was approx. 2 weeks. Mine got infected though, so that it is why it took longer than usual. Most people who have the small grommet put in at the office say that it is healed in a day or two. Im sure more people will chime in soon, and tell you what it was like for them.

Just a thought, but maybe put "grommet" in your thread title. You might be able to suck in more grommet users that way. (click "edit" on your 1st post)...... you dont have to though, just a thought

    good luck

I have had a few tubes put in over these past 2 years with local and general anaesthetics. The best one was with a general anaesthetic. MY only advice is to make sure the surgeon is experienced in this procedure- I had the unfortunate experience of having a tube installed by an inexperienced fellow- a very long and painful process.

I also had two put in by an excellent neurotology specialist- Quick precise, mind you the popping noise as the eardrum was perforated was very disconcerting!

Be prepared for conductive hearing loss afterwards in the lows frequencies- this improves as the eardrum heals and takes about 2-3 weeks to return to normal.

Sorry I can't speak to the injections- just the local anaesthetic on my eardrum made me dizzy and I had to lie down- might be a good idea to arrange for a ride home if possible.
