On these shores, generally confined to the bogan populace. Or am I just being mean?

I think people who are in to country music are found all over the planet. Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash are famous all over. Johnny Cash I think 'crosses over' so that even people (like me) who generally don't like country music appreciate it. I don't know Hoyt Axton.

Actually, there is a really big C&W scene in Australia. Keith Urban in Australian, also Lee Kernagen and Troy Casser-Daily (sp).

I'm not enough of a music afficiando to describe the difference but I hate the C&W that is about big stetson hats and glitz and glamour. The 'earthier' for want of a better word stuff, like Willie or Johnny, I like.

Now you have to explain bogan populace.

We are safe, I don't even know who he is. I mean I've heard the name, but that's it. :)

I think this is where music goes terribly wrong.

Its music. Audio. The amount of visual entertainment which is now stitched to the music industry renders ones musical ability as one of many things to be considered musically successful.

If I were to mention some names or some bands, no I'm not referring to Dolly, you might even consider their song writing or vocal ability to be the least important aspect of their entertainment value, though they're still considered musicians or singers.

I think that's probably about right. Inflammatory, but about right.

I agree with you, up to a point. Yes, music should be able to stand on its own, but the experience can be enhanced (going forward) by a good video and/or a great stage show. Even that Johnny Cash song I posted a page back is soooo much more affecting when accompanied by the video.

    But you know what June?

I do tip my hat to Earl Scruggs, who was the father of modern banjo technique...though I don't play the banjo....

Agreed. Agreed. It's just an ultra shame to see those who are less visually impressive, fall down a category they excel in

Flat and Scruggs, Bill Monroe I am a fan of bluegrass. How about Emmie Lou Harris? The Carter family?

I like the country music that grew out of the tradition of mountain music which came from the Scots Irish folk ballads of the Appalachian Mountain area. I don't care one way or the other about the Texas twostep.

I hear ya. But on the other side, take an OK song, ad a Spike Jonz video and you get magic like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5rRZdiu1UE&ob=av2e

I'll have to wit 7 hours, 41 minutes & 27 seconds to watch that.

*laffs .. I agree with you again, however as for the title of this thread, is it "What kinds of music do you like?", or "what entertains you?"

    Interesting food for thought

adult/album/alternative, indie, acoustic folk rock, alternative rock, americana, an occasional blend including flavors of jazz or blues, I sidestep the mainstream
