That's an amazing story. If I were superstitious I would say you are right about the money coming back to you, because it has been my experience too, though not dimes exactly. I think there is something about feeling secure enough to give that attracts people's confidence and with it sometimes comes money.

When I was in the laundromat one day, I dropped $30 on the floor. The lady who worked there did not see me drop it but picked it up. She asked if it was mine and I said, "no". I knew her well and knew she need the money. She was going to ask other customers if they lost it. I told her not to do that. After all, she found it! She hesitantly put it in her pocket and said, "You know, I need $30 to buy the City Sticker for my car. Now I can drive again." I went home happy.
