This is an online book about various dizzy disorders, treatment, and hearing loss. This is good information!

    Treatment that has worked

Not sure if this has been posted anywhere. I suffer from unilateral MM and have had it for about 20 years. It went into remission for about six years and then last Feb came back with a vengeance. Some attacks lasting more than eight hours. It got so bad there were 2-3 episodes a day, sometimes five to six times a week. I was nearly ready to have to quit working and go on disability ( I am only 49) because I couldn't safely drive etc. The ENT Dr. I was seeing was going through the normal course of meds with everything from antiverts to steroids. None of it was working. He referred me to a specialist at UMASS Med Ctr in Worcester MA. Dr. Richard Gacek http://www.umassmed.edu/pap/news/2004/06_28_04.aspx put me on an antiviral drug called acyclovir. 800mg three times a day to begin with, after one month down to twice a day....it has been two months and no sign of attacks other than a momentary "blip on the screen" . The only side effect that I have experienced is louder than normal ear ringing. If it is related I don't know. It is the kind of level that used to signal an attack. But I will gladly take the ear ringing over the vomitting, fear, dizziness and all the other stuff that comes with MM.

He said that he treats it like any viral infection and that in his experience the dietary and other diruetics are really "old school" thinking in how to treat. I have read some places where this was considered not effective, or controversial. I beg to differ the proof is in the pudding so to speak. Just thought I would share. I am feeling great these days, very little indication of the existence of MM, and back on track to a normal life. I do still have profound hearing loss. He did make one comment and that is in his opinion from his experience (he is an older doctor, former head of Otolaryn. Assoc etc) he said that the incidence rate is higher in it affecting the other ear.

Just my two cents worth here..if it helps anyone, its worth it.

The antiviral approach has helped many, but not all.

I'm so glad it has helped you!

    Welcome to the site :)!

    Hi Leanne -

If you want to post in the Living Room, go to the Home Page and click on Living Room. Near the upper right you will see tabs. One will be "new topic" -- click on that, put in your subject and your post, then click Post underneath. That should do it.
