Today I went to see a Dentist who specializes in Tinnitus, I thought I was going to go and get a mouth guard to use at night when sleeping.

This woman that I saw was amazing!

She spent an hour with me,first xrays of my head while I was standing.
She took a history and then she looked at my bite. Seems as if my lower jaw is not in alignment with the upper. To get to the point she has me sliding my lower jaw forward,it feels weird have been trying it all day. She also filed down 2 of my bottom teeth and told me when I see her again that I would be telling her what to file away.

I have a new alignment pattern for my jaw!

She used a skull head to show the mandibular joint and how my alignment was putting pressure on this area. She said you can get fluid buildup and other problems from this.

She also gave me a packet of small foam sticks to train my bite with,I place one in between my upper and lower 2 front teeth.

It was a revelation looking in the mirror.

I did a fast search here on TMJ and found lots of info that I need to read. She also used some type of laser on my jaw area and neck to release tension.

She said that if the jaw is not in alignment that pressure is placed everywhere, especially the neck.It can also cause pain in the ears.
She said that almost no one looks at the face to make a diagnosis.
    Was a very enlightening session.

She will eventually make me a mouth guard and may need to build up some of my teeth.
Turns out that the Swedish system will pay for all of this if my Ent sends her a letter saying I need this.
    I love Sweden!
I did wait over 6 months for my appointment, was referred by my regular dentist.
This dentist said that she is the only one doing this work in Sweden and that she has published many papers.
She said that 70% of Swedes have this problem of the bite not being proper but it is a big problem for around 1%.

I almost canceled this today as I have been doing fairly OK,big knocking on wood sound!
I have also been seeing a Nucca doc which has definitely helped and have started a Beta blocker about 6weeks ago.

The exercise that she gave me I think anyone can try. It's a matter of sliding your lower jaw forward. She said it is like holding a cigarette between your lips. She also said that most smokers don't have tinnitus. Don't know about that one?
This action relaxes the joint and allows the jaw to relax.

To test it out,try turning your head left and then right and then up and then down, then try it with the jaw sliding forward, she said it causes the neck to relax, maybe freeing up the Atlas Henry?

You could maybe try a pencil or something similar in size and hold it between your upper and lower teeth, not biting but holding it.

I didn't have much tinnitus today, but had a bit more after I left her office. But now I have barely any.

I hope this simple technique helps someone.

Next visit I will try to get more info. I may be traveling so I might not see her again until Aug.

I am blessed in that I have been able to try many things in my search for an answer to feeling better.
All things that I first read about on this board. Thank-you everyone!
I wish everyone on this site had the opportunity to see this woman.

    James,

Glad you have some hope for relief.

Can't speak for all smokers, but I've smoked for 33 years, and the tinnitus is in
both ears, and as we speak it sounds like idling DC-9 engines at the end of the
runway waiting for the tower to give the take-off order.

Worst days are when the "Take-off" order is given, as "throttle-up" is almost
    painful..

She knows her stuff, build ups on the teeth are the correct way to make the bite better. Teeth that are pulled for braces cause much of the TMJ problems in people. I knew a woman who was in a wheelchair from dizziness due to TM problems. She went to a dentist much like the one your seeing and is doing great now. How wonderful for you James :-*

    Thanks peeps!

I'm hoping it works as well.As we know there are many pieces to this puzzle.

When I was researching I found something which I have lost which also related herpes virus to the lesions you can develop in the jaw muscles.I will look for that.

    Re: Another treatment idea?

    Update on my treatment.

Saw the dentist yesterday and she continued her grinding of some of my teeth.Boy do they look pretty now!

Also used some cement type stuff to build up a couple of molars on both sides. My bite felt wierd, but is feeling more normal today I am adapting to it.

The great news, don't know if it is a fluke or the weather or the treatment(or the aliens are leaving me alone) but last night when going to sleep I was aware of SILENCE!!!
No tinnitus, the silence was defeaning! It was wonderful and it has continued today.

The new alignment of my teeth has pulled my jaw slightly forward and down so less tension is on the mandibular joint.
I think I look even more handsome now!

    Will keep you posted.

    Hi James!

Regarding dental problems, check my post I made a few minutes ago ( http://www.menieres.org/forum/index.php/topic,26820.0.html ). I had a root canal on my right side maybe 1-2 years ago, and it became so sensitive that I could not chew on the right side anymore. As a result, I gradually began chewing *only* on my left side. Same side as my MM problems. Don't really know if it's related though...

Good information. I am always willing to try something non invasive that may help with the 24/7tinnitus. Thanks Carole

    James,

This is one of the best posts I have read in a long time. Folks who ignore the possibility that their collateral symptoms are related to their Meniere's symptoms make a huge mistake. The jaw impresses forces on the brain stem, which can cause tinnitus.

You are making some very intuitive decisions pursuing the treatments you have. And many times there is gold at the end of the road.

Great job. I enjoyed reading your experience. Keep us posted.

I say yipeee! I started with a new chiropractor 3 weeks ago. I told Dr. Hackbarth "You are freaky good!" He does stuff no other chiro has ever done to me before. He adjusts my jaw, too. Hurts like h@ll, but my head aches/ neck aches are almost all gone. Has cut the dizziness down, too. But, that may be because my left ear is burning out. I believe in working hard to find the right doctor. I have tried 4/5 chiropractors, including a NUCCA one, and Dr. Hackbarth is the only one who is getting results for me.

Keep working it! I am very excited for you :)

Thanks KT. So happy you have found a chiro who is helping you!

    Thanks Hank.

I'm happy to share any info that might help someone else.

I tried your exercise of sliding your lower jaw forward with a pen in my mouth and it does seem to have some impact on reducing tinnitus levels.

I have always believed there was at least something mechanical in my tinnitus, this is because when i open and close my mouth the tone changes.

thanks for this interesting idea, I personally am very open to try anything that might help

Great Sirlanc I'm glad it helps, maybe next dental visit bring it up,but I think a bite specialist is the person to see if possible.

To be honest when I did the exercises I didn't notice much difference in the levels of my tinnitus, only that my jaw felt more relaxed and so did I.

Since having the work done it has been wonderful, just a bit yesterday and a bit today.
Very stressful day yesterday with my job, still in negotiations and misunderstandings and lawyers are now involved.

Woke up this morning and knew something was off and thought I might go for a spin, but it didn't happen and I have negligible tinnitus!

I am taking a Beta blocker as well and just got my doc to give me Verapamil(CCB) may experiment with that if things act up again.

But I honestly believe that the dental work is making a difference and if it was causing inflamation or restrictions ,etc.it will probably take some time for things to heal up.It's a lifetime of bad alignment.

I'm so glad that it helped you.

I don't know if this will help, but try looking in the mirror at your bottom teeth with teeth together.Notice if the 2 teeth in the center line up with the 2 upper's.The same line should be going through both from what I understand. The line between the upper 2 should continue to the line between the lower 2.

Thanks for all your help as well in our continual search for answers!

    James:

It's interesting you mention holding a pencil (or similar) in your mouth . . . recently, Dr. Oz mentioned on TV this would help rid you of a headache. It's amazing what stress can do . . . and we don't even realize it.

I am certainly going to give it a try. Thanks.
